“My Weissenborn Journey” The Singles - By Aron Radford
This album marks a point in my journey as a weissenborn artist. Exactly one ago from this release I wrote and recorded my first weissenborn track called “Mevagissey Memories”. At the time this was a huge landmark for me as it was proof that I could “make” music. This feeling it very liberating and uplifting for someone who never studied music and is self taught. Finding the freedom of expression through slide music I have tapped into an up to now hidden talent I never thought I possessed or was capable of.

“Mevagissey Memories” was my first proper written, recorded and edited track and one that even when I listen to today am still very proud of. Recorded on my old Chinese laminated mahogany weissenborn it still holds a decent tone one that manages to shine through my old H4 zoom recorder. I heavily edited the tracks carefully deleting my mess ups and somehow I fumbled through the music software to cobble together this quaint instrumental.

“Reflections Of Time” was also recorded on my old weissy and was also considerably post edited, once again I flirted with the “theme” sound effects and narrative overlays. The tune its self was like most of my tracks something created on the spur of the moment.

“The Blue Forest” was different in many ways than the previous recordings and methods. For this track I had newly acquired my custom made Koa weissenbborn. Tonally and sonically this was unparalleled and still to this day I struggle to records its true musical beauty. The main part of the tune was recorded (through proper condenser microphones this time) as a sound sample for a video i made for my luthier which i was to use as a background soundtrack to a video diary of the guitars actual build. As this was unedited and had no post effects it sounded a bit flat to me so i lifted this section and added some synth pads (my first ever attempt at this) and verb and delay etc. The results were very pleasing and would form the foundations to my creative processes in the future.

“Earth Shimmer” was recorded straight from the amp in one take with all the added effects already present in the mix at actual time of recording. If you listen closely you can hear me operating my foot switches on my effects pedals. This particular soundscape of multi effects which i call “ambient” has had a profound effect on my signature sound. I still believe a weissenborn sounds best EQ’d through an acoustic preamp, compressed then layered with reverb and delay. The other effects are gimmicks i know but the aforementioned are a corner stone of my current setup.

“Autumn Smile” is my personal favourite track on this collection. It was my first foray into multi layering tracks and recording different parts to suit. The main melody came out of nowhere and still to this day i cant even recite it now note perfect! This was recorded bare bones with condenser microphones 6 inches away from my guitar. The effects were added post mix and i spent many hours playing with this track to get it just right (even though the EQ isn’t right still!). if i could write an album full of tunes like this id very one very happy man!

“City Heights” was a similar recording/editing process to “Autumn Smile” for the most part but on this tracks i played with a phasing effect on the backing track which gave it a very liquid relaxing vibe. For this track i tried a different approach and recorded the backing strummed track and then played it through my headphones while recording the melody part to try and keep in time with the strumming. I haven’t tried this method since but will revisit it again for sure as i am well happy with the results.

“Savannah’s Lament” was specially written for my daughters 18th birthday. I wanted to create something that was simple and tonally pure. I cappoed this at the 7th fret in open D tuning and played slow and airy notes that i let ring and hang in the air. I made a video for this on YouTube containing photos of my daughter from birth to present day, even know i well up watching it!

“Ragnar” was my first attempt at tabbing a piece of music by ear and sight. Knut “Ragnar “ Hem is a Norwegian instrumentalist that plays the weissenborn like no other person i have ever heard. His style is so melodic and has a flow to it that i aspire to having myself. He’s been a major musical influence in my weissenborn journey and a person i am proud to also call a friend. This piece of music was transcribed from a YouTube video that latter became a track called “Langvanet”. This was a particularly satisfying project to do as it combined all my experience and knowledge to date and one that i hope does the melodies proud that Knut created.

“Pearls Of Wisdom” is just pure weissenborn, played in one take recorded straight from the amp (with effects pedals) and no post edits. It symbolises a turning point in my playing career that i can simply play from the heart and truly express myself playing almost note perfect with a technique i never dreamed of a year before. I feel blessed to be able to create such beautiful sounds and i was over whelmed with the response to this when i released it on soundcloud. I have made many friends along my journey that have helped and encouraged me. My lovely partner Kerry, my mum and dad, Steve “Slowhound” Potts, Knut Hem, Bert Bouwhuis, John Wide, Jesse Wolfe.

I am still writing an recoding and plan to release further material on an ongoing basis, thanks for listening and i hope you enjoy my collection of weissenborn instrumentals.
